They laid me on the shovel's blade after the flames died down, and the wards were drawn on the doorstep.
I opened my throat and a wail of bells rang out to beings not from this realm. At dusk, they arrived one by one with offerings of milk and honey.
The fairies, the foxes, the goblins, the dead, the virgins, and the witches reached out their many hands to greet me. Before I could grasp their fingers, the shovel wielder crouched before me and spoke.
"not yet"
Their touch was slow as they wrapped their hands around me and plucked. Plucked a limb for their heart. Another for their wounds, and two for their kidneys. As they plucked, they murmured about health tonics and cures for diseases unknown.
Bare and bruised on the cold metal, I gazed with hope toward the fair folk. But with no hands, they were out of reach beyond the wards. At dawn, they all left one by one. Now alone until I am regrown and then the cycle begins again.
